Sochi and Gelendzhik are two well-known resorts in Krasnodar Krai, located on the coast of the Black Sea. Both cities have long been considered popular holiday destinations, but each has its own distinctive features. Let us look at how they are similar and how they differ in order to understand where a vacation may be more comfortable and enjoyable.
Description of the Resorts
Gelendzhik is a well-known resort city in Krasnodar Krai, located at the foot of the picturesque Markotkh Ridge on the Black Sea coast. The city stretches around the уютная Gelendzhik Bay, which is bordered by capes on both sides. The total length of the resort’s coastline reaches about 100 km. Novorossiysk is located nearby, about 25 km away, Anapa is about 86 km away, and the distance to Sochi is around 250 km.
One of the resort’s main attractions is the Gelendzhik embankment. It stretches almost 14 km along the entire bay and is considered the longest seafront promenade in Russia. The walking area is decorated with a white balustrade and surrounded by greenery and shady pine trees, which makes strolling there especially pleasant. The embankment offers beautiful views of the sea and the city bay. Gelendzhik also has a seaport, although swimming near it is usually not recommended because the water there is less clean.
The city gives the impression of a neat and well-maintained resort. The streets are kept in good condition, and there are many green areas and parks. Public transport is fairly well developed, which makes it easy to move between districts. At the same time, traffic jams are common in summer because of the large number of vacationers and cars.
Sochi is the largest resort city in Russia, stretching along the eastern coast of the Black Sea for almost 100 km. On one side, the city is washed by the sea, while on the other it is bordered by the mountains of the Western Caucasus — the Main Range and the Watershed Range. Greater Sochi includes several districts and the federal territory of Sirius. The distance to Krasnodar is about 295 km, and to the border with Abkhazia about 150 km. The nearest major city is Tuapse, located approximately 117 km away.
Today, Sochi is considered Russia’s modern resort capital. After large-scale infrastructure development, the city began to resemble European seaside resorts. It features well-maintained embankments, numerous parks, palm trees, and blooming alleys. It is known for its active tourist life: restaurants, cafés, shops, and entertainment venues operate throughout the city. A holiday atmosphere can be felt almost everywhere, and the wide variety of options makes Sochi one of the most sought-after destinations on the Black Sea.
Climate and Weather
The distance between the two resorts by road is about 250 km. Gelendzhik is located slightly north of Sochi, so the climatic conditions differ, although both cities are in the subtropical zone. Sochi has a humid subtropical climate: winters are mild, warm, and rainy, while summers are hot and humid. Gelendzhik’s climate is closer to Mediterranean — drier and sunnier.
Because of the lower humidity, the summer heat in Gelendzhik is easier to tolerate. Air temperatures are usually slightly lower than in Sochi. At the height of summer, in July and August, temperatures in Sochi often reach up to +33°C, while in Gelendzhik they are usually a couple of degrees lower. The sea temperature also differs: in Gelendzhik it is usually around +25 to +26°C, while in Sochi it may warm up to +26 to +27°C.
Beaches and Nature
The beaches in Sochi and Gelendzhik are predominantly pebbly, although there are some differences. In Gelendzhik, there are also sandy sections — for example, the Central Beach or the area of the Golubaya Volna sanatorium, where the seabed is sandy. In Sochi, mixed sand-and-pebble beaches are more common. These include Riviera, Zvezdny, Albatros, and Volna.
Most beaches at both resorts are open to the public and are well equipped. Nearby, there are embankments and walking areas with cafés, restaurants, and souvenir shops. On the beaches, visitors can rent sun loungers and umbrellas, enjoy water activities, and use toilets and other necessary amenities.
From the point of view of swimming conditions, there is one important difference between the resorts. Gelendzhik is located in a protected bay, so the sea is usually calmer and almost wave-free. This makes its beaches more comfortable for family holidays. Sochi has an open coastline, and in summer there are usually more vacationers, so the beaches can be more crowded.
The natural scenery also has its own features. Both cities have plenty of greenery and southern vegetation. In Sochi, palm trees, subtropical plants, fruit trees, and even cacti are common. In Gelendzhik, nature is closer to what is familiar in central Russia — pine groves, oak forests, and other types of trees are often found there.
How to Get There
There are noticeable differences in transport accessibility between the two resorts. Sochi has a major international airport, which makes flying the easiest way to get there. Many flights operate from Moscow, and airfare usually starts at around 11,000 rubles, depending on the season and departure date.
Gelendzhik Airport is not currently operating flights, so it is not possible to fly there directly. Most travelers first fly to Sochi and then continue to Gelendzhik by bus, car, or intercity transport.
Sochi can also be reached by train, as it is one of the most popular rail destinations. There are no direct trains to Gelendzhik, so travelers usually buy tickets to the nearest major cities, such as Novorossiysk or Krasnodar. From there, they can continue by bus, commuter train, or taxi. For example, train tickets from Moscow to Sochi or Novorossiysk usually start at around 4,500 rubles, depending on the type of carriage and how early the ticket is purchased.
Accommodation and Dining
Both resorts offer a wide range of accommodation options. Tourists can stay in hotels of various categories, choose cozy guest houses, or rent private accommodation. Thanks to the developed tourist infrastructure, it is possible to find a suitable option for almost any budget.
Sochi is a larger and more developed resort, which is why it offers especially many modern hotel complexes and high-end properties. For example, a comfortable stay can be enjoyed at the Bogatyr Hotel, located next to Sochi Park on the Black Sea coast. This unusual hotel is designed in the style of a medieval castle and offers guests a high level of service, developed infrastructure, and a convenient location near the main attractions.
Gelendzhik also offers a wide choice of accommodation, although more budget-friendly options are more common there. Many tourists choose small hotels, guest houses, or apartments, which makes it possible to organize a more affordable holiday.
The cost of accommodation depends on the hotel category and the season. For example, in September the cheapest options for two people in both cities may start at around 1,500 rubles per night. At the same time, Sochi has more premium hotels, so the prices for accommodation at the most expensive properties are noticeably higher than in Gelendzhik.
The dining situation is similar. Sochi has a huge number of restaurants, cafés, and gastronomic venues offering cuisines from around the world. It is easy to find both fine dining restaurants and stylish gastrobars here. Gelendzhik also has many places to eat, but they are more often small cafés, canteens, and family-run restaurants with more affordable prices. That is why Sochi usually stands out for the variety of cuisine, while Gelendzhik is more attractive in terms of affordable dining.
Infrastructure and Attractions
Sochi and Gelendzhik both have well-developed tourist infrastructure, so it is easy to find everything necessary for a comfortable holiday at either resort. There are shopping centers, pharmacies, banks, medical facilities, beauty salons, service centers, and other elements of urban infrastructure. Public transport is also well developed, making it convenient to get around the city and between different districts.
Sochi is considered the largest resort in Russia and was significantly transformed after the 2014 Olympic Games. For this event, the city received modern infrastructure, new roads, and upgraded embankments. Today, high-speed Lastochka commuter trains run here, connecting different parts of the coast. One of the most popular places for walks remains the Olympic Park, where visitors can ride bicycles and scooters or simply stroll along the spacious avenues around Fisht Stadium.
Among Sochi’s main attractions are the Sochi Arboretum, Riviera Park, the singing fountains, the oceanarium, the Rosa Khutor mountain resort in Krasnaya Polyana, the Matsesta balneological resort, and Skypark. In addition to urban entertainment, there are also many natural locations nearby, including mountain routes, waterfalls, and protected areas.
Gelendzhik is smaller in scale, but it also offers tourists developed infrastructure and a variety of entertainment options. The city has shopping centers, supermarkets, health resorts, entertainment complexes, and cafés. Popular attractions include water parks, a dolphinarium, an oceanarium, Safari Park with animals kept in spacious enclosures, an amusement park, and a cable car offering panoramic views of the bay.
In terms of natural attractions, Gelendzhik is in no way inferior to Sochi. In the surrounding area, visitors can find picturesque bays, waterfalls, mountain routes, and wild beaches. So lovers of scenic walks and beautiful landscapes will also have plenty to do.

Another landmark attraction is Gelendzhik’s famous embankment, about 14 km long. It is the center of the city’s social life, with cafés, restaurants, amusement rides, cinemas, photo zones, fountains, and walking areas concentrated there. It is also home to the famous White Bride sculpture, which is considered the symbol of the city.
